Barbara Muth Brink, 88, of Greenwich, passed away peacefully at Greenwich Hospital on October 12, with her family present. She was predeceased by her husband, Folger Brink (d.2003), her parents, George and Irene Muth of Yonkers, NY, and her brother, George Muth of Putnam Valley, NY. Barbara is survived by her brother, Marcus Muth of Rockfield, Kentucky and her three children, Mary Alice Schulte (Greg) of Stamford, Tom Brink (Susan) of Tampa, Florida and Katrina Brink of Portland, Oregon, as well as six grandsons: Michael Borchetta, Evan Borchetta, Ryan Borchetta, Jake Schulte, Matthew Brink and Jonathan Brink.
Barbara was born on April 2, 1934, at White Plains Hospital and raised in Yonkers, NY. She was a proud member of the Manhattanville College class of 1956 (English major) and a champion for young women furthering their education. She and Folger moved to Greenwich in 1971 and she became active in such groups as the Putnam Hill Chapter of the DAR, always proud of her family’s long heritage. She worked as a substitute teacher in the ESL classroom on and off for many years and at the YWCA daycare for close to 20 years where she met many families in town. It always makes her family’s day to hear parents fondly recall memories of Barbara caring for their children. Always up for a brain teaser, she enjoyed crossword puzzles, watching game shows, playing card games and trivial pursuit with her family. She was prone to calling out opponents who were not up to the challenge.
In recent years she resided at both Parsonage Cottage and Nathaniel Witherell where she enjoyed her community of friends and caring staff. She loved scary movies and expressed disappointment in recent days that Halloween movies were no longer as frightening as in her youth. Her days were always brighter with the delivery of coffee and some chocolate or a donut by her daughter, Mary Alice.
Barbara was a devout Catholic throughout her life and it brings her family comfort that she is now at peace and reunited with our father, her family and friends.
There was a viewing at Knapp funeral home on Sunday, October 16. A mass of Christian burial was held on Monday, October 17 at Saint Mary’s Church in Greenwich.
In lieu of flowers, a tax-deductible donation may be made to: Friends of Nathaniel Witherell, for the Barbara Brink Salon Fund, 70 Parsonage Road, Greenwich, CT 06830. Barbara loved having her hair done and wants to share the uplifting experience with others at Witherell.
