Letter: National Voter Registration Day is September 20

To the Editor,

On Tuesday, September 20, 2022, the League of Women Voters Greenwich will celebrate the 10th anniversary of National Voter Registration Day, a nonpartisan civic holiday celebrating our democracy. Since it was first observed in 2012, nearly 4.7 million voters have registered to vote on this day.

According to U.S. Census data from 2020, as many as 1 in 4 eligible Americans are not registered to vote. Since 2017, as part of our mission to educate, engage and activate voters, the LWV Greenwich has marked National Voter Registration Day with community-wide voter registration activities. Last year, COVID restrictions limited us to electronic outreach, rather than in-person interactions. By partnering with 11 Greenwich organizations and institutions, we made 46,000 email/hard-copy impressions for our 2021 campaign

This year, the LWV Greenwich expects to have an even greater impact with an expanded roster of partners. We are working with Boys and Girls Club Greenwich, Greenwich Association of Realtors, Greenwich Library, Newcomers Club of Greenwich, YMCA Greenwich, and YWCA Greenwich to communicate information with their members. The Office of the First Selectman is sharing details about voter registration through his weekly e-newsletter. And, most promisingly, we’ve also broadened our youth outreach efforts to include not just Greenwich High School and Windrose, but also several of our local independent schools: Greenwich Country Day School, Greenwich Academy, and Sacred Heart.

On Tuesday, please join us in celebrating National Voter Registration Day! Take two minutes to register to vote, confirm your registration, or request an absentee ballot if you will be unable to get to the polls for a qualifying reason on November 8. Register. Vote. Let your voice be heard! Visit www.lwvgreenwich.org/day for details.
