POLICE & FIRE
Greenwich Police Officers Receive Commendation
Earlier this week, Greenwich Police Officers Franco, Sanchez, and Solomon were given a commendation for their apprehending a group of would be car thieves in the Byram Section of Greenwich. Greenwich is still experiencing high levels of motor vehicle thefts. Please remember to remove your keys and fobs from your vehicles and lock the doors.

Master Police Officer Receives Commendation
Earlier this month, Master Police Officer Al Moavero was recognized with a commendation for his life-saving actions administering aid to an unconscious patient who’s airway was completely blocked and who was unable to breathe.

New Officer Sworn Into Greenwich Police Department
Kaelan Gillick was sworn in as a new member of the Greenwich Police Department earlier this week. He began his training at the Connecticut Police Academy earlier this month.

Greenwich Police Department Offers Women’s Self Defense Class
​​The Greenwich Police Department is hosting the 2022 Fall Women’s Self-Defense Course at Police Headquarters from October 18th thru November 17th. The class is open to women ages 18-55, no experience is necessary. The class will be held at the Greenwich Police Department, 11 Bruce Place, Greenwich, CT 06830. The 2022 Fall Greenwich Police Citizens Police Academy Begins Next Week
The nine-week program will commence on Wednesday, October 19th and meet weekly on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:00 pm at the Greenwich Police Department, with one additional Monday class on Monday, November 7th. The Department’s Program Coordinator must receive all applications and a copy of the applicant’s driver’s license by Wednesday, October 12th. The Citizen’s Police Academy provides Greenwich Residents with a first-hand overview of law enforcement and community-related functions of the Greenwich Police Department.

September is Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th to October 15th to recognize the achievements and contributions of Hispanic Americans who have inspired others to achieve success. The observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. The theme for 2022 is “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation.” The flag of Mexico was raised at Town Hall in commemoration of Mexican Independence Day on Friday, September 16.

September is Deaf Awareness Month
September is Deaf Awareness month which provides us with the opportunity to highlight the importance of providing equal access to members of our communities who are Deaf, hard of hearing, or experiencing hearing loss.

Blood Shortage
The Greenwich chapter of the American Red Cross will be holding four blood drives this month. To donate, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-733-2767, download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card, driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.

Old Greenwich Main replacement
Final restoration work for the Old Greenwich Common Force Main Replacement Project began Monday, September 19th causing temporary road closures and detours in Work Zone 6 (the traffic circle where Arch Street, West End Avenue, and Summit Road meet). A second crew also began working in Work Zone 1 (Oval Avenue near the Riverside train station) on Tuesday, September 20th. Work is scheduled to occur from 7am to 4pm, Monday-Friday. This work should take about four weeks to complete.

Van Leeuwen Ice Cream Opening on Greenwich Ave
Greenwich natives Ben and Pete Van Leeuwen bring their ice cream back to Greenwich. The shop is opening on Greenwich Avenue on Saturday October 1st from 12-Noon until 11pm. Van Leeuwen’s ice cream roster will include more than 30 flavors including dairy and vegan options. In celebration of the launch, the shop is offering $1 scoops of all ice cream on opening day from 12pm to 4pm.

Costume Contest During Walk/Run for Abilis
During the Walk/Run for Abilis on Sunday October 16th at Tod’s Point’s Clambake Area, there will be a costume contest which will include prizes for the most creative outfits. Register at https://www.abilis.us/walkrun/

Old Greenwich Garden Club’s Flower Burst Installation
Last week, the Garden Club of Old Greenwich created a Flower Burst Installation Art on Sound Beach. The display stood more than 10 feet tall, taking volunteers over 5 hours to assemble. The greening base was all sourced from the yards of members, and most of the flowers were sourced from local farms. At the close of the event, volunteers from the club disassembled their installation, giving away bouquets of the flowers.

Parking for Pickleball Creates Problems
Residents neighboring the pickle ball courts at Cristiano Park have issued complaints regarding the large number of people parking on their deadend street to use the courts. When neighborhoods with residential parking border one another, the zones impact each other which becomes an issue for residents when applying for parking permit stickers and paying their fees. Greenwich Police are aware of the issue and working on solutions for how best to accommodate the needs of all.

DAR Commemorates Signing of Constitution
Last week, The Horseneck Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution hosted a ceremony at town hall to commemorate the 235th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution in 1787. Joining the club members at the event were Selectwomen Lauren Rabin and Janet Stone McGuigan, State Representative Kimberly Fiorello, State Senator Ryan Fazio, Town Clerk Jackie Budkins, and David Wold from the Byram Veterans Association.

Greenwich Historical Society is Staging a Major Exhibition on John Henry Twachtman
From October 19th until January 22rd, 2023, The Greenwich Historical Society will present artworks done by American Impressionist artist John Henry Twachtman. The arts displayed depict his home and its surrounding landscape in Greenwich. Twachtman lived in town from 1890 to 1899 where he reached his peak as an artist and created many of his most famous pieces.

Tod’s Point Gate Employee Under Review
The Greenwich Department of Parks and Recreation have received a number of comments via email concerning the gate operations at Tod’s Point. The Parks and Rec Department is taking positive steps to find a resolution which has included first removing the employee from operations while they conduct a full review of the gate access practices.

Navy Pilot Becky Calder Visits Sacred Heart Greenwich
Earlier this month, Commander Rebecca Calder of the US Navy Reserve spoke at Sacred Heart Greenwich. Commander Calder was the first female pilot to graduate from the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School. Commander Calder focused on finding your “why,” why you do what you do. “Finding your why isn’t always right in front of you. But if you’re willing to work hard, anything is possible. You are worthy,” said Commander Calder.

New CT Lottery Winner
An Old Greenwich resident won the grand prize of $20,000 after playing the 20X Cash 8th Edition scratch-off game. The ticket was purchased at a Cos Cob gas station.

Brunswick School Contemplates Purchase of Land on Lake Avenue
Brunswick School is considering the purchase of a more than 16 acre property on Lake Avenue for an Early Childhood Center. Brunswick is also seeking to renovate eight buildings on the property to use for faculty housing. The item was listed on the September 20th P&Z agenda.

GHS Girls Volleyball Team Winning Streak
On Tuesday, September 20th, the Greenwich High School Girls Volleyball Team won against Trumbull. And on Thursday, September 15th they also won in an away game against St. Joe’s.

GHS Girls Soccer Teams Wins
Earlier this week the Greenwich High School Girls soccer team won in a home game against Norwalk.

Vivi Caruso scores four goals in Sacred Heart field hockey team’s triumph vs. visiting FAA foe Hopkins School
Sacred Heart Greenwich raised its record to 3-0 with a 7-0 victory over visiting Hopkins School in an FAA game held on Monday. Senior Vivi Caruso tallied four goals to propel the Tigers to their third straight win. During their three-game winning streak, Sacred Heart has outscored its opponents, 22-0.

Klara Mueffelmann’s four goals powers Greenwich past Brien McMahon
Greenwich High School’s field hockey team evened its record at 2-2 with a decisive 8-0 win over Brien McMahon in an FCIAC matchup held in Norwalk on Monday evening. The Cardinals were ignited by a four-goal performance by Klara Mueffelmann. A senior forward, Mueffelmann recorded four goals, all of which came during the third quarter, to pace the winning effort.

Sacred Heart Greenwich volleyball team tops Hamden Hall in FAA matchup, 3-1
Sacred Heart Greenwich improved its record to 2-1 with a tight 3-1 road victory over Hamden Hall Country Day School in an FAA volleyball match held on Monday.

Lola Tirabassi’s first-half goal sparks Greenwich Academy soccer team past visiting School of the Holy Child
With inclement weather making the playing conditions increasingly difficult during the second half of today’s game between FAA soccer foes Greenwich Academy and School of the Holy Child, one goal was enough to decide the outcome of this physical matchup.

AGH Field Hockey Club’s U-16 team named atop National Club Rankings
AGH Field Hockey Club, based out of Greenwich, has two highly-ranked teams in the Team USA National Club Rankings. AGH Field Hockey’s U-16 team is ranked No. 1 in the country in the U-16 National Club Rankings. The top 10 teams in the nation were ranked by USA Field Hockey.

Falling behind Ridgefield by 21 points in the first half was obviously not in the Greenwich High School football team’s plans Friday night, but the daunting deficit didn’t deter the Cardinals from turning to their ground and pound running game.

Greenwich Academy’s soccer team has begun its season in stellar fashion, posting victories against Masters School and King School and dueling neighborhood foe Greenwich Country Day School to a draw.

Sacred Heart starts season with tie against visiting Taft in NEPSAC soccer matchup
Sacred Heart Greenwich kicked off its 2022 season by dueling visiting Taft School to a well-played 1-1 draw in a game held on Wednesday. Eva Wilkerson gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead when she scored in the 73rd minute off an assist from Madison Hart. Taft tied the score at 1-1 with a goal from Alessia Schettino in the 76th minute.

Sacred Heart Greenwich’s volleyball team began its 2022 season in fine form, sweeping past visiting Rye Country Day School, 3-0, in an FAA match held on Wednesday.

Jayme Stevenson, Candidate for Congress, Signed Support Letter Urging the U.S. Senate to Pass “Respect for Marriage Act”
Earlier this month, Jayme Stevenson signed her support for the “Respect for Marriage Act”. The act essentially reaffirms that marriage for gay and lesbian couples is settled law. The act also would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act.

RTM Approves Old Greenwich School Building Committee Nominee
At the RTM meeting earlier this week, members from many different committees across town came together to discuss, and for the RTM to vote on if combative statements made online would create a tense, partisan atmosphere among Old Greenwich School Building Committee members. Ultimately the RTM voted to approve the nominee.

Greenwich RTM Opts-Out of State Accessory Dwelling Unit Ordinance
Earlier this week, the RTM voted to opt-out of the model state ordinance on Accessory Dwelling Units. At the time of publishing just under half of the towns in Connecticut have chosen to opt out.

Funds Approved For Town School Security Enhancements
At their meeting earlier this week, the RTM approved the use of just over $800,000 (eight hundred thousand dollars) to increase and improve school security hardware and police presence at Greenwich Public Schools.
