On July 15, Susan Helen van der Griend passed away peacefully at her home in Old Greenwich, surrounded by family and friends. Susan was born in Sydney, Australia, as were her two brothers and sister. Following her graduation from The University of New South Wales, she set out to explore the world, traveling to Indonesia, Greece, Scotland, and eventually living in Alaska. Her eagerness for adventure and passion for experiencing other cultures deeply influenced and inspired her children.
Susan met her soulmate, Mark van der Griend, in Sydney before moving to New York City together in 1991. Soon after, they moved to Old Greenwich where Susan quickly immersed herself in the community. She built a successful career as a realtor, but most importantly, built a beautiful family.
Susan was predeceased by her mother, Shirley Stevens (nee Ebeling). She leaves behind her father, Allan Paul Stevens; husband, Mark; and three children, Maximilian Jan, Isabella Helena, and Oscar David; and daughter-in-law, Molly Jane (nee Peterson). Susan also leaves behind her two beloved corgis, Wally and Roo.
Susan loved with an open heart, was a mother to many nieces, nephews and friends of the family, and touched many people’s lives. Her strong spirit will always be remembered; she truly was a force to be reckoned with. A beautiful and kind, yet powerful woman.
Special thanks to all of Susan’s doctors and nurses at MSK, her caregivers, and all of her loved ones who supported her and her family. Susan’s personality never ceased to shine through. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Memorial Sloan Kettering.
There will be no service at this point in time. A Celebration of Susan’s Life will be held in Old Greenwich and Sydney at a future date.
Susan’s glass was always half full, never half empty.
