Lincoln Center, a federation of 10 performing arts organizations that share a 16-acre campus in New York City, was the brainchild of John D. Rockefeller, III. It was realized with the help of the 1949 Federal Housing Act, Mayor Robert Wagner and urban planner Robert Moses, renowned architects such as Philip Johnson and Eero Saarinen, and major philanthropic gifts. Its storied history includes the spectacular opening productions of the Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic, and New York City Ballet, as well as the famed Juilliard School.
