
Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference Adds Greenwich Educator to Hall of Fame
In late June, the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference added six new members to its Hall of Fame including GHS Principal Ralph Mayo. Mayo has been at Greenwich Public Schools for 41 years. His career has included time as an English teacher, athletic director, house administrator, program administrator for Special Education, Eastern Middle School principal, and interim superintendent. Mayo has held several roles in support of athletics, as a board member with the FCIAC, CIAC and CAS. He is also chairman of the CIAC Lacrosse Committee and was also a coach in the Greenwich varsity boys’ lacrosse, girls’ basketball, and wrestling programs, and junior varsity football program.
A Special Thank You to the Greenwich Police Department
In late June, fifth-grader at International School at Dundee, Isaac Farr presented his research project “Expression Through Art ” to members of the Greenwich Police Department. Through his art, Farr thanked the GPD for their work keeping the Greenwich community safe.
Farr’s project is part of the International Baccalaureate Fifth Grade Exhibition, providing an opportunity for students to engage in in-depth inquiry while exploring multiple perspectives and sources. GPS Pick for CT State Department of Education’s 2023 Connecticut Teacher of the Year
Last month, Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones announced that Western Middle School’s Mrs. Tyler Mecozzi is Greenwich Public School’s selection for Connecticut State Department of Education’s 2023 Connecticut Teacher of the Year Program.
Junior Sailing Association of Long Island Sound & Baccarat First Regatta of the Season
On Monday, June 27, Baccarat and the Commodore Law Trophy kicked off the first regatta of the season for the Junior Sailing Association of Long Island Sound (JSA). The regatta, named after Commodore Robert Law, was held at Indian Harbor Yacht Club. The event spanned two days with over 50 registered sailors for the Law Trophy. In third place for the 420’s was Luca LaRosa and Michael Donovan from Riverside Yacht Club. In the Laser Radial class Richard Sykes from Riverside Yacht Club finished in first place. He was followed by Charles Caporrino from Pequot Yacht Club in second and William Clark from Riverside Yacht Club in third.
Sound Beach Avenue Bridge Detour Finished For Now
The Sound Beach Avenue Bridge detour is no longer in effect and the road is officially open to two-way vehicular traffic. The project is on schedule and slated to be completed this Fall. Until the project is completed, expect intermittent alternating one-way traffic and potential periodic road closures. Pedestrians will continue to be routed through Binney Park during construction.
Holly Hill Entrance Permit Reminder

GPD & GEMs Rescue Woman Who Jumped from north Mianus Bridge
Earlier this week, Greenwich Police Department Dispatch Center received a call from the Connecticut State Police requesting assistance with a woman sitting at the edge of the I-95 Northbound bridge over the Mianus River, between Exits 4 and 5. Master Patrol Officer Moavero made contact with the woman and engaged her in conversation. Officer P. O’Connor with the assistance of some of the area marina workers, was able to take a position in a work boat underneath the bridge. For reasons unknown, the woman suddenly pushed herself over the edge of the bridge and fell into the Mianus River. After landing in the water, Officer O’Connor was able to get the woman out and pull her into the boat. She was then taken to a nearby marina, where GEMs was waiting and took over her medical care. From there, she was transported to Greenwich Hospital. An initial assessment showed no signs of life-threatening or serious injuries.
June 29, 2022, to be designated as Thomas “TK” Keegan Day
First Selectman Fred Camillo has declared June 29, 2022, to be designated as Thomas “TK” Keegan Day Lt. Thomas” TK” Keegan (ret) ended his many years of service to Greenwich on July 1st of this year after a 45-year career with the Greenwich Police Department. Lt. Keegan began his service for the Town on August 22, 1977 as a GPD Dispatcher. On October 23, 1978, he was sworn in as a Police Officer. After retiring from active service in July 2003, Lt. Keegan continued to serve as a Special Police Lieutenant until July 1, 2022.
GPD Summer Safety Tips for Parents
Make sure your children check with you before they leave the house. Be sure to check-in regularly with them when you’re not with them.
Have your children use the buddy system when playing or going anywhere. It’s safer and more fun.
When riding a bike, children are required to wear a helmet and must obey the rules of the road. Ride to the right and keep out of traffic.
When home alone, remind kids to keep doors locked and not to open the door for or talk to anyone who stops by unless the person is a trusted family friend or relative, and the visit has been pre-approved.
Honorary Fire Chief Serves First and Last Day (For Now)
Earlier this week in conjunction with the Red Cross the Greenwich Fire Department had the honor to welcome Eddy as their fire chief for the day. Eddy was a huge success with the GFD and we look forward to seeing him soon
Register Your Fire Alarm
Residents must register their fire alarm systems. The $20 annual registration fee was due July 1st. Late fees are $70 beginning August 1st and $220 beginning September 1st. All alarm devices, including self-installed devices purchased online, calling for a response from the Fire Department must be registered with the Alarm Administrator. Yale New Haven Health Programs in the Greenwich Sentinel Community Calendar
There is a lot going on at the Yale-New Haven Health Greenwich Hospital right now! The hospital is offering a series of courses on all different human health topics with the aim of improving our community’s health. Programs range from Parkinson’s Disease support groups all the way to childcare classes, as well as one-time informational events on a range of topics. Most courses will take place as online Webinars however some events will be in person.

Changing of the Guard
The Rotary Club of Greenwich held their Changing of the Guard ceremony last Wednesday night, June 29th at the Riverside Yacht Club. Greenwich First Selectman and Rotary CLub member Fred Camillo was in attendance. The Rotary club has issued a special thank you to Christene Freedman, DG nominee for installing the new president and board of directors.
Greenwich Hospital Earned National Award for Stroke and Diabetes care
Greenwich Hospital’s stroke program was recognized this month by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for providing up-to-the-minute scientifically based care to ensure patients are treated quickly and safely to prevent brain loss.
Christ Church Welcomes New Director of Youth Ministry
Christ Church welcomes Josh Barton as the new Director of Youth Ministry. Barton has sixteen years of experience as a full time Youth Minister in Gilbert, Arizona and Fairfield County. Most recently, he served for eight years as Student Ministry Pastor at Trinity Church, managing a team of 20+ volunteers and serving 100+ students.
Aquarion Requests 27 Percent Rate Hike Over 3 Years
Aquarion Water, owned by Eversource, has requested to raise its rates by a total of 27 percent over the course of three years. Aquarion is seeking to raise rates by 13.9 percent the first year, 6.9 percent the second year, and 4.2 percent the third year. Aquarion serves 56 towns in Connecticut. A Public Utilities Regulatory Authority hearing was scheduled for this past Thursday. The company aims to mitigate impacts for low and mid-level users and encourage higher volume residential customers to conserve.
Greenwich Teen Received $5,000 Scholarship
Planet Fitness offered $5,000 scholarships to fifty deserving teens who model the judgment-free, pro-kindness, and anti-bullying values that are so important to both Planet Fitness and Boys & Girls Clubs of America.Planet Fitness’ Judgment Free Generation initiative focuses on acceptance, and is awarded to those students that are passionate about spreading kindness, and stopping bullying.

Parks & Recreation 2nd Annual Photo Contest
The Greenwich Department of Parks and Recreation has announced its 2nd Annual Community Photo Contest “For the Love of Parks and Recreation,” to celebrate National Parks & Recreation month this July. The contest will run from July 1st-31st. Winners will be announced in mid-August. Photos can be submitted online at www.greenwichct.gov/photocontest. Submitted photos should be high resolution originals and free of filters. The contest deadline is Sunday, July 31st.
CT Children Go Free at 130+ Museums This Summer
Gov. Ned Lamont announced that the popular state program Connecticut Summer at the Museum has returned for this summer season, allowing Connecticut children to receive free admission at over 130 museums across the state. From July 1st until September 5th of this year CT kids aged 18 and under +1 CT parent or guardian can receive free admission to any participating museums. Denise Merrill Resigns as Secretary of State
As of 12:00 noon on Thursday, June 30, former secretary of state Denise Merrill resigned from her position. Almost a year ago, Merrill announced she would not run for another term.
English Language Arts Program Coordinator K-8 Has Been Appointed at GPS
In late June, Greenwich Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones announced that she has appointed Kimberly Paladino English Language Arts Program Coordinator K-8, effective July 1st. Paladino will be responsible for designing, developing, and evaluating the K-8 English Language Arts instructional program.

FEMA Gives Almost $3.7 Million To CT For COVID Testing Costs
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is sending over $3.5 million to the State of Connecticut in order to reimburse the state for setting up and operating a series of neighborhood testing sites during the Covid-19 pandemic. Using both state workers and contractors, the CT Department of Corrections procured pop up tents, weights, heating, cables, moveable furniture, 360,000 nasal test kits, 140,000 oral test kits, swab kits, and collection tubes for testing.
The Garden Club of Old Greenwich Turns 100
This year, The Garden Club of Old Greenwich (GCOG) is celebrating its 100th Anniversary. The Club consists of members throughout Greenwich who are dedicated to “stimulate[ing] an interest in the cultivation of plants, flowers and the making of gardens, and to promote community and civic betterment” stated Wendy Yu, one of the club presidents. GCOG has launched many projects throughout town from building gardens to awarding scholarships, and even a garden therapy group. GTC Looking for ‘Treasured Trees’
The Greenwich Tree Conservancy is interested in knowing if you have a Treasured Tree on your property. With summer quickly approaching, they hope you are out enjoying your trees and might consider nominating a special tree in your yard. A tree is treasured for many reasons: a special memory or story; magnificent size; unique shape; Spring flowers or Fall foliage; climb-ability. The Tree Conservancy wants to hear about YOUR Treasured Tree. If selected, your tree will have a nameplate installed and you will be given a framed picture at the Nameplate Installation Ceremony, a special recognition event in October. Greenwich Golfers Helping Raise Money to Support The Maritime Aquarium
Greenwich residents were among the golfers helping to raise nearly $200,000 – an event record – to support The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk’s exhibits, conservation initiatives and environmental education efforts during the Aquarium’s recent 11th annual Golf Classic at Wee Burn Country Club in Darien.
Residents Request Greenwich Selectmen Declare Climate Change Emergency
In an effort to demand action on climate change, a group of residents went before the Greenwich Board of Selectmen this week to ask the town to adopt a resolution that would declare a climate change emergency. The board did not vote on the resolution since this was a first-read of the agenda item; however, they are expected to circle back in two weeks. Isabelle Harper, a graduating senior at Greenwich High School, presented the item to the selectmen. The board applauded the group for coming up with the resolution, noting that some changes need to be made but overall the resolution has the support of the Greenwich Board of Selectmen.
School Building Committee Nomination Deadline Set
Residents who are interested in applying for nomination to the Old Greenwich and Julian Curtiss school building committees must submit their nomination forms by July 15. The Selectmen’s Committee will be holding special Board meetings in July and August to interview candidates. Successful candidates will be nominated for appointment by the Representative Town Meeting. 2022 Child Tax Rebate
The child tax rebate, which was recently signed into law, is intended to help Connecticut families with children. You may be eligible for a child tax rebate of up to a maximum of $750 ($250 per child, up to three children).
To be eligible for this rebate you must meet all of these requirements:
You must be a resident of Connecticut;
You must have claimed at least one child as a dependent on your 2021 federal income tax return who was 18 years of age or younger; and
You must meet certain income thresholds.

Greenwich Cannons edged by Danbury in Senior American Legion baseball action
Through 16 games, the Greenwich Cannons Senior American Legion baseball team has 11 wins, is tied for first place in Zone 4 and has the components in place to make a run for the state championship. And that’s despite a three-game losing streak that the Cannons find themselves in.
Greenwich’s Bryce Metalios earns Academic All-America lacrosse honors; James Pilc, Matthew Trimmer, Charlie Zola, All-State Team selections
After producing an outstanding season for Greenwich High School’s boys lacrosse team, Bryce Metalios and a number of his Cardinals teammates received postseason honors. Metalios, who will soon be heading to MIT, earned USA Lacrosse Academic All-America honors for his excellence in the classroom. A high-scoring attack, Metalios, who graduated from Greenwich High School last month, also excelled on the field throughout his impressive Cardinals career.

Numerous Greenwich High School girls lacrosse athletes earned postseason accolades for their achievement both on and off the field throughout the 2022 season. Noey Johnson, who graduated from Greenwich High last month, earned USA Lacrosse Connecticut All-America Academic honors. Johnson, a midfielder, who helped power the Cardinals lacrosse team with her goal-scoring and dynamic playmaking ability, will further her education at Wake Forest University.

Charlie Johnson’s prowess as a defender on the Brunswick School lacrosse team was certainly well known during his Bruins career. Recognized as a top-notch defensive player, Johnson helped power Brunswick’s outstanding unit on defense, which made it difficult for the opposition to generate goals throughout the 2022 season.
Greenwich Academy’s Ellie Johnson earned USA Lacrosse All-America honors; Ava Butz, a 2022 GA graduate, received Academic All-America accolades
Ellie Johnson, a rising Greenwich Academy senior, was one of 22 Connecticut players who recently received USA Lacrosse/CHSCA All-America Team honors. Johnson, a dynamic defender, who has committed to bring her lacrosse skills to Stanford University, has helped power Greenwich Academy’s strong and effective defensive unit the past several seasons.

The 2022 USA Lacrosse/CHSCA All-America teams were recently announced and Sacred Heart Greenwich was certainly well represented. Franny O’Brien, who competed on the Tigers’ Varsity A lacrosse team for four seasons, was named a USA Lacrosse/CHSCA All-America athlete for the second straight season.
Greenwich High girls basketball program holds first annual Alumni Challenge
Though it’s summertime, there was a lot of basketball action inside Greenwich High School’s gymnasium on Saturday. That’s because the first annual Greenwich High School Girls Basketball Alumni Challenge was held. The game included members of the current Cardinals girls varsity team, along with some 2022 graduates who competed on the school’s 2021-2022 basketball squad and Greenwich basketball athletes from the past – alumni.
Greenwich’s Whitaker Grover, Jayden Satir earn NISCA All-America diving accolades for second straight season
Another season of diving excellence earned Greenwich High School’s Whitaker Grover and Jayden Satir All-America honors for the second straight year. The National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association released its list of 100 All-America high school boys divers recently and Grover and Satir once again received All-American accolades for their outstanding performances on the 1-meter board.

The National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association recently released its list of 2021-2022 Girls One-Meter Diving All-America athletes and Greenwich residents Annie Bingle and Grace Wu earned the prestigious honors.
