Greenwich Hospital Begins Car-Seat Safety Checks
Beginning Thursday, June 16th Greenwich Hospital has begun offering monthly car seat safety checks every 3rd Thursday of the month from 8am to 2pm at West Putnam Medical Center, 500 W. Putnam Ave. in Greenwich. Residents can schedule appointments with a certified technician to learn how to correctly install a car seat and properly secure their child in the car seat. 60 Year Greenwich Lion Made International Honorary Member
Gifford Reed became a Lions International Lifetime Member on May 26. Gifford credited his longtime service in part to his father-in-law Carlton Gisborn, a founding member of the organization in 1933. This year Giff pitched in for the fall grapefruit fundraiser, assisted with some of the roughly 1500 Lions pediatric eye screenings, and with the yearly Foundation Fund Appeal. For 2022, the Lions were able to make $22,000 in grants to local non-profit human service organizations despite the postponement of the Pancake Breakfast.
New Holly Hill Resource Recovery Facility Entrance Permit Required by July 1
Residents will be required to display the new Holly Hill Resource Recovery Facility entrance permit in their vehicle by July 1st when visiting the facility. For a fee of $25, residential permit holders can dispose of their garbage refuse, recyclables, yard debris, construction demolition materials, and other recyclables at the Holly Hill Resource Recovery Facility. Holly Hill Resource Recovery Facility is located on 4 Holly Hill Lane and is open Monday through Friday 7am to 2:30pm and Saturday from 7am to 12 pm The fastest and most convenient way to apply for a permit is online. GHS Wins Third Place in PSA Contest
GHS placed third and took home the $2,500 prize for their social media campaign featuring research-based messaging that was shared on Twitter, a Safe Driving Day event at GHS that was promoted on Instagram, and video interviews with safe driving organizations. According to the National Safety Council, car crashes are the number one cause of preventable deaths for teens. The competition presented a creative opportunity for teens to express safe driving practices. The winning schools put their prize money towards a post-prom, post-graduation, or safe driving program.
CMS Places Fifth in Odyssey of the Mind State Competition
In March, a team of Central Middle School students tied for first place in the Odyssey of the Mind State Competition, earning the right to compete in the 2022 World Finals Competition. Earlier this month our champs, Bancker Appleman, Murphy Bennett, Asha Chattoraj, Eden Citron, Daniela Gojani, Elliot Ornstein, and Sylvester Pecora III, returned from the Odyssey of the Mind World competition at Iowa State University and proudly finished fifth out 45 teams in their division. Over four days, the team solved spontaneous verbal and long-term problems. They were assigned to create a musical about the life of a lesser-known historical figure and chose Ada Lovelace, the first computer programmer.
A Superior Performance
Last week, the Western Middle School seventh and eighth-grade orchestra traveled to Bristol, CT to compete in the 2022 Music in the Parks Festival at Bristol High School, followed by a trip to Lake Compounce amusement park. They competed against 10 other schools and received the highest possible ranking of “Superior.” This festival experience was part of the many fine school music programs and serves as a valuable assessment for both teachers and students. The performance was adjudicated by university-level music educators, including Kathryn Crask and John Mastroainni.
SLOW Turtle Crossing
Thanks to conservation efforts, the Diamondback Terrapin has been inhabiting Greenwich Cove in larger numbers in the last few years. They have now been seen crossing the road looking for nesting areas in two locations: 1) the entrance causeway near the gate house and 2) the small parking lot near the Holly Grove. Terrapins nest throughout June and July. Be watchful as you drive through Tod’s Point.
Next Generation of Physicians
Greenwich Hospital recently celebrated the 47th Internal Medicine Residency Program Graduating Class. The graduating class consisted of seven residents and seven interns. This year’s graduating residents were Sally Ju Young Bae, MD, Michael Foti, MD, Deepa Jansen, MD, Ginamarie Papia, DO, Waqas Salam, DO, Leilei Teng, MD, MS, and Chanjuan Zhong, MD, PhD. The graduating interns were Saheeb Ahmed, MD, Sotonye Bobojama, MD, Liam du Preez, MD, Daniel Kim, MD, Marjorie Morales, MD, Victoria A. Perez, MD, and Juliana Runnels, MD. Jennifer Hewlett, MD, the departing chief resident, was also recognized.
Marcelo Orias, MD, PhD, received the Golden Apple Award (Teacher of the Year).
Umar Hasan, DO was presented the Resident Teacher of the Year Award.
Michael Foti, DO, received the Resident Physician Patient Experience Award.
Deepa Jansen, MD, was presented the Resident Quality and Safety Award.
Sally Ju Young Bae, MD received the Henry E. Markley, M.D. Humanitarian Award in Medicine.
Chanjuan Zhong, MD, PhD, received the Nelson Bonheim, M.D. Research Award in Medicine.

Greenwich RTM Approves Affordable Housing Plan
Greenwich RTM voted 168-19, two abstaining, to adopt a municipal affordable housing plan.
Parking Panic on Perna Lane
At the Selectman meeting on Thursday, June 9th, Deputy Chief Chief Kraig Gray, also director of Parking Services, presented an ordinance in response to Perna Lane residents’ complaints which would ban on-street parking for most of Perna Lane. The Department of Public Works Engineering Division conducted traffic counts and looked at speeding, sight line issues, and the current way residents and their guests park along the street. Perna Lane residents did not take to the suggestions for their street and had much to say. Some residents suggested returning Perna Lane to a dead end, others questioned why Perna Lane specifically was being given this new ordinance and not other surrounding streets. Just about every resident who spoke questioned where guests would be able to park, First Selectman Fred Camillo voiced concerns about this as well.
June Dog License Reminder
Greenwich Animal Control wants to remind residents that state law requires all dogs over six months old to be licensed. Dogs must wear their tag at all times. Current rabies vaccination must be presented at the time of licensing, as well as a certificate from your veterinarian indicating whether or not the animal has been spayed or neutered. Download an application from the town clerk’s website. You may drop your form off at town hall or mail it with your dog’s rabies certificate. $8.00 for sterilized dogs and $19 for non-sterilized dogs, with a $75.00 fine for failure to license your dog.
Chickahominy’s Express Pizza & Greco’s Bella Cucina Closed
After 34 years in business, Express Pizza & Greco’s Bella Cucina in the Chickahominy neighborhood of Greenwich will be closing down for good. They said on their website that they are closing due to rising food costs and staffing challenges.
Old Greenwich Resident Won Mega Millions: CT Lottery
An Old Greenwich resident recently won the CT Lottery. This resident won $10,004 after playing Mega Millions, he purchased the winning ticket from Corner Wine & Liquor in Stamford.
Person Rescued From Vehicle In Greenwich
After a vehicle crashed in Greenwich last Saturday, a person suffered serious injuries and had to be rescued from a vehicle. Units found someone trapped inside the vehicle. Crews worked for more than 20 minutes to extricate the person. The injured person suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Greenwich Avenue Intersection Improvements Project Hits a Yellow Light
Last Thursday, The Greenwich Avenue Intersection Improvement project was presented to the Board of Selectmen for Municipal Improvement status. The Board of Selectmen took no action, and most likely will be revisiting this item in two weeks. If approved, the project will move to the Planning & Zoning Commission.

The fast-running duo of Kaitlyn Fay and Esme Daplyn were among the Greenwich High School athletes who excelled at the recent State Open and New England championship meets, held recently at Veterans Stadium at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.
Brunswick’s Varsity Eight boat captures crew program’s first-ever New England title at NEIRA Championship Regatta
Brunswick School’s Varsity Eight garnered gold medals at the ultra-competitive 76th annual New England Interscholastic Rowing Association (NEIRA) Championship Regatta, recently. The victory, a first-ever New England title in rowing for the School, capped off an undefeated season for the Bruins’ First Varsity Eight boat.
Staples defeats Greenwich in title game of state high school boys rugby tournament
High School boys rugby rivals Greenwich and Staples split their two previous games this season, with both teams recording convincing victories and Thursday’s state final between the Cardinals and Wreckers followed the same pattern. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Thursday’s matchup saw the Wreckers cruise to victory in convincing fashion.

On the strength of Andrew O’Donnell’s winning performance in the 400-yard meter run, the Greenwich boys track and field team placed a strong sixth out of 64 squads at the ultra-competitive CIAC State Open recently.
Greenwich High junior Dylan Atkinson edged in semifinal-round of CIAC Invitational Tennis Tournament
Dylan Atkinson, a Greenwich High School junior, made an outstanding showing at the CIAC Invitational Boys Tennis Tournament, advancing to the semifinal-round in the singles bracket. Atkinson’s journey toward the singles championship came to an end with a 6-1, 7-6 (2), loss to top-seeded Tighe Brunetti of Staples in today’s CIAC Invitational Tournament semifinals, held at the Tennis and Fitness Center of Rocky Hill.
Glenville School rallies third-grader Julian McRandal
Julian McRandal has medulloblastoma, a type of cancerous brain tumor that affects muscle coordination and movement. Having learned of his diagnosis soon after he started second grade at Glenville, Julian hasn’t been able to attend classes most of the school year because of his symptoms. Tuesday, June 14th, was the ideas of various groups coming together to show Julian they care. The school, the PTA, Glenville Volunteer Fire Company, Greenwich Police Department and Greenwich Emergency Medical Service all helped to make it happen. Firefighters escorted Julian to school in their commemorative firetruck, students gathered in the gymnasium for a special presentation dedicated to him where astronauts starred in a video made just for him, students and staff wore special “Team Julian” tee-shirts, and the Glenville Gators Community held a candlelight vigil for him during his surgery, photos of which were shared during the presentation.
