P&Z Meeting Discusses 4th Ward and 8-30g
This past Tuesday’s P&Z Meeting was focused on the 192-unit, multi-story affordable housing development proposed for Greenwich’s 4th Ward. Under 8-30g, 30% of the 192 units would be designated as affordable. The proposed new development would require the demolition of seven historic houses on Church St and Sherwood Place. The historic nature of the 4th Ward was discussed at length in April, so P&Z asked everyone to focus on other relevant issues. P&Z and the proposed developers heard concerns regarding sewage levels, traffic flow, Fire Department access, Putnam Court Easement, what extra costs for amenities means, the removal of trees, the possibility of stormwater runoff bringing pollutants to the town water supply, whether or not the developers had done a shadow analysis. As of the end of this P&Z meeting no definitive answers were reached, developers will be addressed many of these questions in the next meeting regarding their proposal.

Cleanup efforts are underway at Binney Park after a Diesel fuel leak last Wednesday. The town is currently monitoring the situation along with CT DEEP. Greenwich Fire Department responded to a call later that morning for a report of an odor and sheen on the water in the brook. At the time of CT DEEP’s arrival later that day the leak had stopped, but between 50 and 70 gallons had already escaped. Cleanup activities were then initiated by the CT DEEP Emergency Response Unit. Control measures have begun and will likely continue for the next few weeks. There is no foreseen lasting impact at this time.
Garlic Mustard Invasion
Last Saturday residents gathered in Pomerance to help put an end to the Garlic Mustard Invasion sweeping many forests in the Northeast. Garlic mustard is a eurasian allelopathic plant, meaning it sends out signals that discourage native plants from growing around it. Garlic mustard has a two-year life cycle, sending up a pretty rosette of leaves in its first spring, then the next year it grows hanging seed pods that can dispense as many as 3,500 seeds per plant. If you see this plant whilst on a walk in one of our town’s beautiful forests or in your own backyard feel free to pull it out and suppose of it without remorse.
