2022 Beach Season Begins
This year’s beach season will begin with the official opening of Greenwich Point and Byram Beach on tomorrow, May 28 and will run through September 5. The ferries to Island Beach and Great Captain’s Island will start on June 11 and will run through September 11. Byram Park Pool is open as of today, May 27.
Riverside School Celebrates Arbor Day
Last Friday, April 29th Riverside School celebrated Arbor Day by planting a tree in the school’s back field. Second and fourth grade classes were participated along with a handful of volunteers and school staff.
Auto Theft in Greenwich between 05/18 and 05/24
Between last Wednesday, May 18th, and this past Wednesday, May 24th, there were five auto thefts in town. All thefts were of unlocked cars with the keys/fobs inside. All vehicles were recovered; one in Greenwich, one in Waterbury, one in Bridgeport, one in Meridan and one in NJ after a brief pursuit which ended in a crash. No suspects have as of yet been apprehended.
Fazio Nominated for Second Term in the State Senate
The Republican Party has unanimously nominated state Senator Ryan Fazio for a second term to represent Connecticut’s 36th district including New Canaan, Stamford, and Greenwich.
BackCountry Jazz kicks off its 2022 Greenwich Jazz Festival
As of Thursday evening, June 9, BackCountry Jazz (BCJ) will be back in town with a Benefit Concert that is kicking off the 2022 Greenwich Jazz Festival. The concert will introduce rising young jazz artists at the concert venue, the Round Hill Community House.
Bruce Museum Announces a Promised Gift of Two Important Artworks
The Bruce Museum announced a major promised gift of two outstanding works on paper by Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse from Greenwich resident and longtime Bruce Museum supporter William L. Richter. Picasso’s Bouquet des Fleurs (1909-10) and Matisse’s Autoportrait (1944) will be exhibited for the first time in the William L. Richter Art Wing when the newly expanded Bruce Museum opens in spring 2023.
Sewage Rehabilitation in Greenwich
This past Monday, crews began sewer rehabilitation work on Greenwich Avenue between Railroad Avenue and Grigg Street. There are currently no road/sidewalk closures. This project is solely to improve the longevity and reliability of critical sewer infrastructure.

Greenwich Fire Department welcomed its newest certified firefighters Ackaway, Heffernan, & DeVito who graduated from CFA class 69.
Residential Burglaries Investigation Ongoing
In a press briefing this past Wednesday, Lt Martin O’Reilly said there had been three residential burglaries in Greenwich in the past week. One took place on May 18 on Indian Head Road, one sometime between May 16th and 19th on Pecksland Road, and one took place on May 18th on Caroline Place. Whether or not the burglaries are related is yet to be determined.
Greenwich greenscape Task Force Enters Final Phases
The Greenwich Post Road Greenscape Task Force is entering the final phases of its project to add over 500 trees along Route 1 from Port Chester to Stamford. On Thursday Greenwich residents joined the task force along with First Selectman Fred Camillo and State Rep Steve Meskers in Old Greenwich to begin the final phase of marking these important tree sites.
Early Morning Robbery at Wendy’s Restaurant
This past Monday, May 23 at about 1:50am, two men dressed in hoodies and masks entered Wendy’s on West Putnam Avenue. One of the men brandished a firearm, demanding cash from the manager. An undisclosed amount of cash was given to both subjects. No one was injured and the men fled.
Disagreements over Requirement to Remove Bridge in Mead Point
Greenwich’s Planning & Zoning commission is being sued by Mead Point LLC. The plaintiff is appealing the commission’s decision from late April to approve an application for a single family home provided the applicant removes and updates the bridge connecting a causeway to their land stating that the bridge was unauthorized.
Historic Overlay Application to Planning & Zoning
A pre-application was submitted to Greenwich P&Z for a Historic Overlay zone at 12 Grigg Street just off of Greenwich Avenue. The applicant has proposed restoring the house, adding offices on the first and second floors, and keeping residential use on the third floor. The proposed design would restore 12 grigg Street to the original style and period of the house, built in 1900.
New Pickleball Courts Lose Funding
The Representative Town Meeting cut $116,000 from the municipal budget that was being looked at for new pickleball courts in town. Originally, the basketball court on Bible Street was to be turned into new pickleball courts; however, neighbors voiced concerns about possible noise levels, and the RTM had questions about the cost.
Greenwich Choral Society Scholarship Winners Announced
The Greenwich Choral Society recently announced this year’s recipients of the $3,000 Nathalie Rutherford Scholarship Award. The recipients are Brooke Hadden, of Greenwich, and Jane Sheehan, of Cortlandt Manor, NY.
