Elizabeth Ryan passed away peacefully on April 25, 2022, at her home in Boynton Beach, Florida, with her best friend and great love, Michael, by her side.
Elizabeth was born October 23, 1953, in Rockville Centre, New York, and grew up on the south shore of Long Island, New York. Her parents were the late Dr. Robert J. Ryan and Rita Fox Ryan.
Elizabeth attended Quinnipiac College for two years before transferring to the University of Bridgeport, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology.
Elizabeth’s first position as a medical technologist was at New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center, where she quickly decided she could do exactly what the doctors were doing. Ten years later she received her Medical Doctorate from SUNY Downstate Medical Center, the same school her father had attended, and where he met her mother. After completing her internship and residency at New York Hospital/Cornell University Medical Center, Elizabeth began a 30-year career as an anesthesiologist at Greenwich Hospital in Greenwich, Connecticut.
In February 2008 she met Michael Madigan. They clicked immediately and Michael proposed six months later. Elizabeth and Michael retired in 2018 and spent their time between Boynton Beach, Florida, and North Kingstown, Rhode Island. They made many new friends in both places.
Anyone who ever met Elizabeth would immediately fall in love with her. Throughout her life she was devoted to helping other people; even after retirement, she chose to pursue a Master’s Degree in Nutrition. She loved gardening, kayaking, healthy eating, rescue dogs, snowshoeing, audiobooks, biking, taking part in the New York City Easter Parade and traveling, especially via cruises. Before turning to medicine, she had explored becoming an airline pilot, and together she and Michael would often stow bicycles in their airplane, fly to a new town, and spend the weekend cycling and staying at a local inn.
Elizabeth leaves behind her beloved husband, Michael Madigan; her sisters, Mary Patricia Ryan, Dolores Ryan Reynolds and Theresa McEntee; and her stepsons, Josiah Madigan and his wife, Joanna, and Jesse Madigan and his wife, Katy.
Elizabeth is predeceased by her parents, Robert and Rita Ryan; her brothers, Robert and James Ryan; her sister, Laura Ryan; and her brothers-in-law, Bruce Reynolds and Philip McEntee.
