Initially, Stalin had wanted World War II to break out, thinking that it would weaken the leading capitalist countries to the benefit of the Soviet Union. When Germany attacked the Soviet Union, his nation was unprepared, and depended heavily on the U.S. lend-lease program for machinery and provisions. In spite of this, Stalin remained neutral in the Pacific war until mid-1945, and imprisoned U.S. pilots who landed or crashed in Russia after bombing raids on Japan.
