Tickets to the Sentinel Award Event Honoring Bob Capazzo are Now Available

COVID/GPS Update
The number of patients currently hospitalized with COVID in Connecticut is up by 19 to a total of 117 as of Wednesday. Of the 117 patients currently hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed COVID, 70 (60%) are considered fully vaccinated and 47 (40%) are considered not vaccinated.

Sophia’s Reopening in Cos Cob
Sophia Scarpelli is open at 428 E Putnam Avenue (just down from the First Bank of Greenwich). Offering unusual gifts, great hostess gifts, vintage and new jewelery, funny and pet gifts as well as vintage apparel. Costumes will be by appointment. 

Sound Beach Avenue Bridge Closing
Sound Beach Avenue Bridge will be closed from April 11th until July 7th. This closing will allow for a project to replace a deteriorating bridge used by over 14,500 vehicles daily. The vehicular detour will route via Harding Rd. and Forest Ave. and pedestrians will go through Binney Park. Visit the Town’s website to learn more about this project.

Greenwich High School Mailman Retires
Mr. Franco, GHS’s long time mailman and dedicated public servant, has retired after 45 years of working for the United States Postal service with the last 15 years spent delivering the mail to Greenwich High School.

GPD Self Defense Classes
GPD is offering a Summer Women’s Self-Defense course for young women aged 16 to 21. The classes take place Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6-8pm and the price is $40 which includes the cost of class and a tee shirt. April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month
April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and the Greenwich Police Department is asking motorists to pull over and park in a safe location if you are expecting a text message or need to send one or to ask your passenger to be your “designated texter.”

New Installation at Byram Park
The new Purple Martin colony has been installed at Byram Park. Greenwich Conservation Commission thanks all those at Parks & Recreation in Byram. Keep your eyes open for another Purple Martin colony popping up in Greenwich soon.

CT 169 Strong Rallies Against Zoning Proposals
Today, CT 169 Strong’s rally at the Old Greenwich Train Station ran from 4pm to 5pm. The group rallied in opposition to several zoning bills that are currently under consideration by the Connecticut General Assembly that would remove local control of many P&Z projects.

Byram Residents Request More Vehicle and Pedestrian Safety
Due to the frequent number of crashes in the areas of Mead Street, Mill Street, and Delavan Avenue Byram Residents requested that the BET approve funding for a $300,000 project to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety.

After a Two Year Hiatus, Greenwich United Way Reading Champions Returns
After two years, Greenwich United Way’s Reading Champions volunteers are back working with students in Greenwich grade schools in person. Interested volunteers can contact Greenwich United Way program coordinator Cecile Meunier at cmeunier@GreenwichUnitedWay.org or 203-869-2221.

Residents Invited to Share Opinions on Central Middle School
This past Tuesday, residents were invited to share their opinions for the educational specifications for the new school building. Consultants of the project, Construction Solutions Group, have already met with CMS staff and will be meeting many community partners and elected officials beginning next week.

Downtown Residents Lose Power Over Balloon Incident
About 6am this past Sunday, residents of a Downtown Greenwich neighborhood were awakened by an explosion near the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and Milbank Avenue. This explosion was caused by Mylar balloons hitting power lines and was followed by a power outage. Power was restored by 8:30am. Mylar balloons are known to cause explosions when hitting power lines, please be conscientious with your balloons.

CT League of Women Voters will Hold 8 Debates for the 2022 Election Cycle
Connecticut Public and the League of Women Voters of Connecticut will co-produce a series of 8 debates for the November 2022 election cycle. The debate series will be held every Thursday night at 8:00 pm, beginning September 15 and ending University on October 27.

Old Greenwich Shop Receives Violation for Flowers but Residents Show Their Support
The town received a complaint about an artificial flower display around the windows at Abigail Fox Designs on Sound Beach Avenue, and a violation was issued. The large floral swags are considered an illegal sign, whereas holiday garlands and wreaths are considered temporary. Residents wrote up a petition in support of Abigail Fox Designs.

Trees Posted for Removal at Greenwich High School
Two town trees have been posted for removal at Greenwich High School, and a public hearing has been scheduled via Zoom on Wednesday April 13the at 1:00pm. The two trees are Honey Locust trees and have been requested for removal for the contaminated soil to be removed where the trees are.

Legal Action Taken Over 8-30g at Brookridge
The proposed project at 5 Brookridge Drive was submitted under Connecticut’s affordable housing statute, 8-30g, overriding Greenwich’s local zoning regulations and control. Several residents in the area of Brookridge Drive and Hillside Rd have recently commenced legal action against the proposed project. These residents take issue with the development over health and safety concerns believed to outweigh any need for affordable housing in the area.

Mismatched Day to Support Young Greenwich Resident
Sam Buck has always had a unique fashion sense. 11 and a fifth grader at Glenville School, Sam proudly wears mismatched clothing. On April 28, Glenville School, other Greenwich schools, and the greater community are encouraged to wear mismatched shoes or socks to support Sam and raise money for Vanishing White Matter Disease (VWD) research. Sam was diagnosed with VMD around 2 years of age. There are only about 250-300 cases of VWM worldwide.

New Fitness Center Possibly Coming to Greenwich
Plans for a new Barry’s in Greenwich have been recently submitted to the Greenwich’s Planning & Zoning Commission. Barry’s started in West Hollywood, California in 1998, utilizing High-Intensity Interval Training. There are several Barry’s in New York City and on Long Island. The closest one to Greenwich is in Scarsdale, N.Y.

Greenwich’s Water Conservation Lawn Watering Schedule in Effect
Those with even numbered addresses may water only on Sundays and Wednesdays before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. Those with odd numbered addresses may water only on Saturdays and Tuesdays before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. Properties without an address number, watering is allowed only before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. on Sundays and Wednesdays.

Construction Nearly Finished on Causeway Project at Tod’s Point
The Town of Greenwich announced last Thursday that the Greenwich Point Causeway construction is nearly finished. The stretch has reopened for regular foot and vehicle traffic.

Bruce Park Nominated for ‘Best City Park’ in the Country
USA Today 10 Best is currently holding a contest determining the top 10 city parks in the country. Bruce Park is one of the nominees. Residents can vote now until April 11 at 12-Noon. The winning parks will be announced on April 22.

Greenwich Public Works Completed Work on Multi-Year Project
Greenwich Public Works recently completed work on the replacement of almost all the Old Greenwich Common Force Main pipeline. This section of pipeline is more than 3 miles long, with approximately 85% having been replaced or rehabilitated. This infrastructure brings wastewater from a large swath of Greenwich including Old Greenwich, Riverside and Cos Cob. The last section to be replaced was operational on March 22.
