Sally Louise Wolk (Raymond), born Sept. 26, 1947, passed away April 2, after a courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma. She was surrounded in her final days by family and friends who loved her for all or most of their lives. For those of you that knew Sally, you know she was a caretaking force, and was the most kind, selfless person.
Sally was born and raised in Greenwich where her fondest memories were of roaming Great Captain’s Island for days at a time, where her father was a caretaker. She called it “her Island” and was none to happy when the town of Greenwich took over the Island and made her share. Inspired by her father Paul Raymond, she radiated empathy, forever putting others first. This particularly drove her children crazy at stop signs, where she would let everyone go ahead of her even if it was clearly her turn.
Like many of her generation, Sally met her husband at the Stumble Inn (if you know, you know). They stumbled together for 52 years, building a happy life in Stamford, and most recently in North Myrtle Beach, SC. Her home was welcoming to all, and she fed and cared for all who crossed the threshold, her entire extended family, her friends, the friends of her children, and of course her beloved grandchildren. There was almost nothing that one of her chocolate chip cookies couldn’t cure.
Sally graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in 1965 and went on to excel in bookkeeping and accounting roles throughout the years. She retired after spending more than 20 years with Pitney Bowes in the Corporate Tax department, where she made sure no birthday ever went by without a birthday cake made by Sally.
Sally was an avid gardener, bird feeder and animal lover. She welcomed numerous cats, dogs, iguanas and hamsters in her home throughout the years. She also spent many years volunteering with a local cat rescue.
She is survived by her loving husband Richard, her three children; Jennifer Harrington (Patrick) of Evergreen, CO; Lia Short (John) of Fairfield, and Matt Wolk (Diana) of Brookfield; her grandchildren Ryan Harrington, Keara Harrington, Connor Harrington of Colorado; Whitney Short, Harrison Short, Peyton Short of CT and Gabriel Wolk of Brookfield. She is also survived by a younger brother Paul (Chip) Raymond (Mary Jane), of South Salem, NY; older sister Gail Cammarota of Charleston, SC, and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends who are family. Her two cats Stella and Natasha miss her dearly.
Count yourself lucky if you have tasted her baking; she has sent you a card, planned you a fundraiser, thrown you a party, or loved you. Our hearts are shattered, but we are better for having been blessed by her being a part of our lives.
Burial will be private, on Cape Cod, MA. Memorial donations can be made in her honor to her favorite charity, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital stjude.org/donatetoday.
A celebration of life will be held sometime this summer in Connecticut, where we will all raise a glass and sip a frozen kamikaze in her honor.
