Junior League Teaches ‘Money $ense’ to High School Students

The Junior League of Greenwich (JLG) taught Money $ense, a financial literacy program, to a group of high schoolers at the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich (BGCG) this past fall, and to 10 REACH Prep Scholars this winter, over the course of three sessions.

The JLG’s free financial literacy program follows Junior Achievement’s (JA) “Personal Finance” curriculum, and teaches the interrelationship between today’s financial decisions and tomorrow’s financial freedom. To achieve financial health and wellness, teens learned money-management strategies, including employment and income, budgeting, smart shopping, investing and risk management.

“Building foundational life skills for students in our community is a critical component in ensuring future success and independence,” noted Karen Richard, JLG President. “Knowing how to manage a budget and the responsibilities that come with earning an income will help to equip graduates with knowledge to make sound decisions that will help shape their future financial security. The JLG is proud to support Junior Achievement, REACH Prep, and the Boys and Girls Club in this effort.”

Deelia Wadsworth, Education and Volunteers Coordinator at the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich, shared, “Financial literacy is an important issue that our teens need more exposure to. Increasing their knowledge helps them to avoid financial mistakes and plan for a strong, secure, financial future. The JLG Money $ense program teaches our teens how to make informed, effective decisions on how to use and manage money.”

REACH Prep noted, “Exposing high school students to financial literacy information is an essential step in ensuring their future success. The JLG Money $ense Program offers our Scholars an opportunity to explore how a variety of financial situations and choices can impact their earning and use of money and their planning for financial stability.”
