FEMA Awards CT More than $4.3 Million for Debris Removal Costs

The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be sending more than $4.3 million to the State of Connecticut to reimburse the government for the costs of removing debris after Tropical Storm Isaias in 2020.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation will receive a total of $4,305,174 in federal funding through FEMA’s Public Assistance grant program to reimburse the costs of picking up approximately 63,174 cubic yards of vegetative debris left behind after Isaias struck on August 4, 2020.

Using state employees and contractors, debris removal operations collected the debris and hauled it to 40 permitted temporary staging sites, then hauled it to nine permitted final disposal sites between August 2020 and July 2021.

“FEMA is pleased that we can assist the people of Connecticut with the cost of cleaning up after Tropical Storm Isaias,” said FEMA Region 1 Regional Administrator Lori Ehrlich. “As climate-driven disasters become more common in New England, FEMA’s partnerships with state, local and tribal governments will become even more critical.”

FEMA’s Public Assistance program is an essential source of funding for states and communities recovering from a federally declared disaster or emergency.

So far, FEMA has provided nearly $24 million in Public Assistance grants to Connecticut to reimburse the state for expenses related to Tropical Storm Isaias.
