9/11 Twentieth Anniversary Community Worship Service with the Rev.Dr. Stuart Hoke, Eyewitness to the 9/11 Attacks

“Our Shelter from the Stormy Blast: The Spiritual Dimensions of 9/11”

Twenty years ago, the Rev. Dr. Stuart Hoke ran from the blazing towers to his workplace at Trinity Church Wall Street where he immediately conducted an extemporaneous service of scripture, prayer, and hymns until the first tower’s collapse. His reflections on the redemptive love of the Almighty during that hour of terror, and within the days and months to come, is testimony to the Spirit working through us “in sighs and groans too deep for words.”

“On the twentieth anniversary, let us remember those who lost their lives and those who fought to save lives on 9/11,” said the Rev. Dr. Cheryl McFadden, Senior Associate Rector of Christ Church Greenwich. “Our faith comforts us. Our faith unites us.”

Ordained in 1972, Rev. Hoke has worked in a variety of ministries. In 2012, he retired after eight years as Executive Assistant to the Rector of Trinity Wall Street in New York City. Currently he resides in Arkansas and serves as Interim Rector of St. Mark’s Church, Little Rock. He continues an extensive ministry of recovery throughout the Episcopal Church.
