Scholarship money can make all the difference to a young person’s education. The Greenwich Police Department Scholarship Fund (GPSF) grants scholarship money to qualifying students of current Greenwich Police Officers. They are asking the community to support the officers who help keep our community safe by contributing, however big or small, to the Fund for the future of the Officer’s children. The Fund relies on the support of both individual contributions as well as a group of local businesses.

The GPSF was the beneficiary of a percentage of product sales in June at NicholsMD of Greenwich. “I am proud to donate to the Greenwich Police Department Scholarship Fund in celebration of 125 years of keeping our town, community, and children safe,” said Dr. Kim Nichols, Board-Certified Dermatologist & Cosmetic Surgeon Founding Director of NicholsMD.

Dr. Nichols presented Greenwich Chief of Police James Heavey with a donation of almost $1,500 on Thursday, July 1. NicholsMD of Greenwich, an award-winning, luxurious dermatology boutique, provides high-level concierge care and non-surgical, innovative skincare solutions.

“The Greenwich Police Department is proud of the partnerships it has created with the Greenwich community, including our local businesses. They always stand ready to help when asked, and we are very appreciative of the community’s support of our scholarship fund,” said Chief of Police James Heavey.

In the 2020-2021 school year, 26 GPDSF scholarships were funded. The number of supported students is expected to increase next school year based on the number of current high school seniors. The Greenwich Police Dept Scholarship Fund traces its roots to 1962. At that time, three scholarships were awarded whose value represented 80% of the Fund’s then available resources. Now some 60 years later, the Fund supports well over 20 applicants annually who can be either commuter or boarding students, as long as they are full-time and maintain an academic GPA of 2.75 or better.

The Fund’s Board of Directors is comprised of four individuals whose roles in the community ensure the Board’s continuity. They include the Chief of Police, the Greenwich High School Headmaster, a Town Attorney, and a highly reputable and concerned volunteer from Greenwich’s business community. The Office of the Chief of Police is responsible for the day-to-day administration of its activities. Scholarships are awarded after review and a vote by the Board.
