The Glenville Volunteer Fire Company will mark the seven-year anniversary of presenting the David N. Theis Award for Outstanding Service to the Community, by honoring Greenwich civic leader and volunteer, Laurence “Larry” Simon. For the past six years, the Glenville Volunteers have presented the Theis Award to Greenwich residents who selflessly and compassionately serve the town’s people, organizations, and institutions. Created to memorialize the life and work of Selectman David Noble Theis,  who unexpectedly passed away in 2014, the award celebrates Dave’s spirit of leadership by example. Previous recipients include Livvy Floren, Icy and Scott Frantz, Ed Dadakis,  Bea and Peter Crumbine, and Terry Betteridge, with last year’s award presented posthumously to Kerrin Coyle, with Jack Kriskey accepting on her behalf.

Larry’s commitment to the town goes far beyond his role as Chair of Nathaniel Witherell,  a non-profit nursing facility that is rated as one of the best in the country. A former 12- year member of the Board of Estimate and Taxation, Larry’s volunteer efforts include involvement with the town’s Retirement Board, Greenwich Land Trust, the Bruce  Museum, the League of Women Voters, and the United Way of Greenwich. While that might be enough to fill most people’s calendars, Larry also finds time to be a volunteer tutor at the Glenville School. Instead of slowing down after retiring from a company that he founded, Larry has instead focused his talents and time on making Greenwich better every day. He truly embodies the spirit of the Theis Award. The Glenville Volunteer  Firefighters are excited to honor him for his contributions to our town.

The reception and award ceremony will be held on Thursday, October 7, at Tamarack  Country Club, at 55 Locust Road. Doors will open at 6:00 pm, with the ceremony beginning at 7:00. Invitations will be mailed to previous attendees, but all are welcome to join us in honoring Larry. Anyone wishing to attend the event, or be a sponsor, can register on the Volunteers’ website at www.glenvillefire.org, or by calling 203-532-9606.

The Glenville Volunteer Fire Company, founded in 1903, is dedicated to protecting the lives and property of the citizens of Greenwich. Through its fundraising efforts, the  GVFC has been able to acquire specialized equipment that allows for much-enhanced

coverage of Glenville, Backcountry, and the Merritt Parkway, as well as the entire town. Ongoing fundraising will help provide first responders with additional specialized equipment to be used in its mission to serve Greenwich.
