Next Gen Climate Leaders Panel – Special Earth Day Program – Presented in Partnership with Bedford 2030
Wednesday, April 21, 7:00pm

Presented by Sarah Douglis, Bedford 2030

This month, we are putting our local youth climate leaders in the spotlight! Climate change is a crisis that majorly impacts the lives of everyone on this planet. Young people bear the extra burden of experiencing those impacts far into their futures, and as a result, many have committed to taking climate action in their schools, communities, and personal lives.

We are thrilled to be partnering with Bedford 2030 to offer a Next Gen Climate Leaders Panel, moderated by Bedford 2030’s Board Vice President, Sarah Douglis. Four impressive, local young women will take the virtual stage to have a conversation about their experiences, perspectives, and hopes for climate action in our community and beyond.

Join us to learn from these amazing local leaders and be inspired by all of the hard work they are putting into protecting the health of our planet.

Earth’s Development and the Need for Decarbonization
Thursday, April 22, 7:00pm

Q&A With Dr. Alex Halliday, Earth Institute

This Q&A is a must attend! Alex Halliday of the Earth Institute will discuss the development of the Earth and the critical need to decarbonize in order to address the climate challenge. Earth’s surface environment has changed dramatically over billions of years of development.  Scientists have been modeling the climate for decades and sounding the alarm about global warming. The evidence now suggests that climate change is going to be worse than most scientists, let alone the wider public, had realized. Carbon dioxide stays in the atmosphere for decades.  Therefore, much of this is effectively irreversible and will worsen without new technologies to remove carbon from the atmosphere. This talk will finish with the challenges for the future of decarbonization, including the technologies and actions that are needed, and some of the reasons to be optimistic.

Alex Halliday is the Director of Columbia University’s Earth Institute.  He joined the Earth Institute in April 2018, after spending more than a decade at the University of Oxford, during which time he was dean of science and engineering.
