GPD’s Statement on the Arrest of Retired Greenwich Police Officer

The Greenwich Police Department was informed that retired Police Sergeant Joseph Ryan was scheduled to plead guilty in federal court on April 12, 2021, to a single felony count involving the possession of firearms by a drug-dependent person.

The incident upon which this guilty plea was based was investigated by the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and prosecuted by the US Attorney’s Office in New Haven. The acts of former Police Sergeant Ryan were not in keeping with the standards and values of the Greenwich Police Department. His accused crimes should not detract from the honorable efforts performed by members of this Department in protecting the public and serving the community.

We appreciate the work of the ATF and the US Attorney’s office in ensuring the integrity of the law enforcement profession. As a Department, we remain committed to our Code of Ethics and the oaths upon which we all swore, and we collectively believe we should be held accountable for our individual actions.
