Letter to the Editor: Camillo Weighs in on Protection Zone Legislation

An Open Letter to Sen. Looney from First Selectman Fred Camillo

Dear Sen. Looney….

I hope this email finds you well.

I wanted to express my opposition to SB 950, AAC The Replacement Of Public Utility Poles And Revising Vegetation Management In Utility Protection Zones. While I certainly understand the need to protect lines and poles, experience has shown that a proper maintenance program will negate the need the for this legislation. Recently, we had more devastating clear cutting of trees along the railroad tracks in the Riverside section of Greenwich. When we requested a meeting with Metro North regarding this, they met with us and admitted a routine maintenance would have most likely saved these trees from their eventual demise.

In addition to the health and wellbeing factors associated with trees, the aesthetics of our towns and cities also benefit from their presence. Let us work together to not only preserve one of our greatest natural assets in our beautiful state, but to enhance them. This bill proposes to do the opposite.

Please oppose this legislation and send a clear message that we value our trees, and the public benefits they provide.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Fred Camillo

First Selectman

Town of Greenwich
