Dear Editor of The Sentinel and Residents of Greenwich,
Last night the RTM was up until the early morning debating issues which will affect the Town of Greenwich for years to come.
The first item was a resolution brought by petition to restore police to Greenwich Avenue. After over an hour of debate pro and con by RTM members and speeches by many brave residents, First Selectman Fred Camillo, and Chief Heavey, the RTM cast their votes (81 in favor, 127 against, and 7 abstaining.) It was a bipartisan community issue. While the resolution didn’t pass, the message was clear. Hopefully more adjustments for the safety of pedestrians and motorists will be made so that the general public will be less subject to dangerous circumstances (speeding cars, bikers, skateboarders, etc.)on Greenwich Avenue as the pandemic wanes and business returns.
We are indeed fortunate in the Town of Greenwich that our fabulous police force is fully funded. Previously both the RTM and BET voted to keep officers on Greenwich Avenue at intersections. As traffic resumes on Greenwich Avenue, there will be an even greater need to protect pedestrians and motorists of all ages. Safety and liability are concerns of those who voted for this resolution. Thank you to those of you outside the RTM who spoke and those who tried to speak. Please stay involved. Contact your local representatives and write the newspapers. Our Town of Greenwich counts on your input. Be safe! Nancy B. Burke
(RTM member)
