Letter: A Thank You from Greenwich Community Gardens

lettertotheeditor

To the Editor,

Dear Anne,

Your article on June 12,2020, “How Does Your Garden Grow at Bible Street” was a very nice window into the peace and the generosity that seems to grow so naturally at the community gardens here in town. I’m glad you got to meet some of our gardeners and that Maria Cleary-Guida gave you the scoop on our early start this year with the Neighborly Harvest Program. I seem to recall you and I meeting years ago over at Armstrong Court where I was leading those efforts which now are well rooted in two of our gardens. That means more food and more support for Neighbor to Neighbor. As of last year, we are also tending a third, beautiful, newer and organic garden on the property of Nathaniel Witherell. All the food we grow there goes directly into the kitchen where the chef uses it in preparing meals for the residents. Last night, we had our first harvest there of beautiful lettuces, fresh pea pods and herbs. It’s just the beginning of what we hope will be a long and fruitful season. I’d be glad to show you that garden someday, if you have the time.

For now, I just want to thank you most sincerely for helping more people in town understand that we have a lively and growing community gardening movement going on here in Greenwich. We rely entirely on donations, volunteers and annual plot fees to keep everything working. Your help in getting the word out is appreciated by all of us.

Please take care,

Terri Browne Kutzen
Chairwoman, Greenwich Community Gardens
