Safety Town is a comprehensive one week safety education program offered every summer that teaches awareness and accident prevention skills to local children entering kindergarten in the fall. Children learn from experts through fun and interactive activities.

Under guidance of classroom teachers, police officers, firefighters, EMS and other community helpers, children learn in an indoor classroom setting as well as on a specially designed kid-sized “Safety Town” layout.

Children are fitted with their own bike safety helmet that they use for the week, and then take home to keep. They ride pedal cars, walk and “shop” through the town complete with buildings, crosswalks, sidewalks, and street markings. They also tour an ambulance, fire truck and school bus.

Daily lessons are followed up with take-home handouts and additional reference information for parents and caregivers. At the end of each week of training, the graduates each receive a Safety Town diploma.

The sessions are held at the Eastern Greenwich Civic Center, 90 Harding Rd., June 3 to 7 and June 10 to 14. Morning sessions run 9 to 11:30 and the afternoon session from 12:30 to 3.
