We are sad to announce the passing of Anthony (Tony) Case Hayden. He died on Sept. 10, two days shy of his 89th birthday, from complications of Alzheimer’s. His wife of 61 years, Margret; their five sons, Aaron, Andreas, Anthony, James, Sean and his eight grandchildren: Owen, Alistair, Elinor, Elisabeth, Roan, Kristen, Raenna, Adrian and his younger brother, Michael of Greenwich CT, miss him greatly.

Tony grew up in Old Greenwich, CT and raised his family there. He attended Edgewood School, Yale and Columbia Universities. He was a member of the Connecticut National Guard and was mobilized to serve in Germany after World War II. When he returned, he started a long career as a teacher, first at Allen Stevenson School in New York City, then Brunswick School in Greenwich. Watching his students grow and flourish was a great pleasure of his life. He could recall every student’s name and often commented when he came across a newspaper article on them. He was proud of his service to the community, donating blood at any chance he could; working in town politics, as a frequent contributor to the editorial page of local papers; as a member of the NAACP; and spending many, many weekends in Washington, D.C., demonstrating against war. Tony was an avid Contra dancer who delighted partners from New York City to Center Lime New Hampshire for many decades.

We appreciate the gifts of curiosity, music and poetry Dad gave us and the companionship he gave Mom.
