George Demko

George M. Demko, a Greenwich resident since 1973, died on Aug. 22, 2018 at his home after a short illness. Born in Manchester, CT on May 31, 1932, he was the son of the late Michael Demko and Anna Simonis Demko.

Mr. Demko graduated in 1954 from The University of Connecticut with a B.S. in Accounting, and while at UCONN played basketball for the UCONN Huskies. He was a member of the Beta Sigma Gamma Fraternity. Mr. Demko served in the U.S. Army’s 10th Infantry Division as a 1st Lieutenant during the Korean War. Since 1956 he held a number of financial and operational positions including five years with Arthur Andersen in New York City and 10 years with C. Lloyd Johnson Co. in Great Neck, N.Y. and Virginia Beach, Va. Since 1973 Mr. Demko has served as Executive Vice President, Treasurer, Chief Financial Officer, Director and Chairman of Profit Sharing Investments and the Finance and Audit Committee for Eurpac Service, Inc. in Greenwich. He was elected to the Greenwich Board of Estimate and Taxation and served three terms from 1989 to 1995. Mr. Demko was a member of the Democratic Town Committee for 12 years and served as Treasurer for four years in addition to serving on several candidate’s committees. He also served as a member of the Town of Greenwich, Land Acquisition Committee for three years. Mr. Demko was a member of the Board of Directors of the Greenwich YMCA for four years in the 1970’s and served as Chairman of the Finance Committee. He was also Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of Greenwich Broadcasting (WGCH) from 1978 to 2003. He was a former member of the Greenwich Boat & Yacht Club and was a member, and former President, of the Exchange Club of Greenwich. Mr. Demko was currently a member, and former President, of the Greenwich Horseneck Club and a member of the Harpoon Club. In recent years he divided his time between homes in Greenwich and Narragansett, R.I.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Phyllis Demko. He is also survived by a daughter, Jamie Demko Davis of Huntington, N.Y. and a son, Michael Demko of Colorado and by three grandchildren, Joseph Miata, Caroline Demko and Matthew Demko. He was predeceased by three sisters, Anna Litke, Elsie Cone and Emma Demko of Manchester, CT.

Calling hours were Aug. 24. Services were held Aug. 25 at the First Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be private.
