To recognize the high level of science research that high school students in the region have undertaken, the Bruce Museum in Greenwich has selected 10 young scientists in grades nine to 12, to present posters of their work on Thursday, May 31, at the 4th Annual Phenomenon: Science Innovation Fair. Their cutting-edge research covers topics that range from low-cost diagnoses of COPD and prostate cancer to “Smartphone Detection of Waterborne Diseases” and “Carbon Dioxide Capture Using Asphalt-Waste Filtration.”

The 10 students were selected from nearly 30 applicants in Westchester and Fairfield counties. Judging and viewing of the posters will take place on May 31 from 5 to 7:20 p.m. at the museum, and the public is encouraged to vote for the People’s Choice Award. The top two projects, judged by noted regional scientists and based on scientific achievement as well as presentation, and the People’s Choice selection will receive cash prizes during the awards ceremony beginning at 7:30 p.m. The ceremony includes a brief keynote speech by a student scientist.

“These students represent the best and brightest of the next generation of scientists,” notes Dr. Daniel Ksepka, Bruce Museum Curator of Science. “Many of our competitors go on to win state and national prizes, but more importantly many will go on to make an impact in fields such as medicine and sustainable energy.”

Admission is free to all and includes light refreshments. For more information, visit brucemuseum.org or contact Cynthia Ehlinger at cynthiae@brucemuseum.org or 203-413-6756.
