On Sunday, May 6 at 4:30 p.m., Greenwich Library partners with the Yale Alumni Association of Greenwich to bring Yale Professor and Director of the environmental engineering program, Menachem Elimelech, to the Library’s Cole Auditorium.
Elimelech will discuss the serious challenges presented by water scarcity and the lack of safe drinking water in the twenty-first century. Water – the most vital element of life – is becoming perilously scarce.
This presentation will cover the extent of water scarcity worldwide, the challenges of providing adequate water supply for many regions in the world, and technological solutions to augment water supply via seawater desalination and wastewater reuse.
The global challenge for adequate and safe water supply will be illustrated through several cases in California, Israel, and sub-Saharan Africa. Drawing from these cases, it is shown that global water challenges involve complex technological, societal, cultural, and political aspects.
Menachem Elimelech is the Roberto Goizueta Professor at the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at Yale University. He founded Yale’s environmental engineering program in 1998, for which he continues to serve as the director. His research focuses on emerging technologies for energy-efficient desalination and water purification. Professor Elimelech is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering and a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Doors open at 4 p.m. and refreshments will be served. Registration is suggested using the Library’s online calendar located on the Library’s website at greenwichlibrary.org
