Robert John Brown Sr., lifelong resident of Greenwich, died on March 12 at Greenwich Hospital at the age of 74.

Bob was predeceased by his wife, Mary Lou Brown (April 2016). He is survived by his son, Robert Jr; his son, Kevin, his wife Monica and their sons Brennan and Brayden of Fort Myer’s; his daughter, Shannon, her husband Dante and their daughters Margaret and Brigid of Trumbull.

Bob was born on July 13, 1943 and grew up in Byram. He attended Greenwich public schools and graduated from Greenwich High School. He served in the Air Force from 1962-66 and was honorably discharged.

Bob joined the Greenwich Police Department in 1969 and rose through the ranks to Lieutenant and retired in 2002. Rap, as he was known on the force, took immense pride in his job and leading the officers under his command. He never tired of seeing the improvement and success of others that he helped in his career. The job he loved was actually how he met his wife. Bob was directing traffic on Greenwich Avenue when he met the love of his life and partner for 45 years. This seemed to be fate as his passion for being a police officer could only be topped by his love for his family.

Bob enjoyed hijinks and there are numerous stories to prove it. You always knew exactly where you stood with him as he was a straight shooter. He loved fishing on his boat, but no one would ever have accused him of being a great fisherman. When at home, Bob could be found with his dog, Meekee, by his side. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be greatly missed by many.

There was a memorial celebration at Greenwich Hyatt on Monday, March 19. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Robert J. Brown Sr.’s honor be made to Greenwich Silver Shield Association (greenwichpolicesilvershield.com or make checks payable to The Silver Shield Association and mail to P.O. Box 1123, Greenwich, CT 06836).
