BYOGreenwich, along with Garden Education Center, Greenwich Library, and Surfrider Foundation CT, will host a screening of the new, award-winning environmental documentary Bag It in the Cole Auditorium at Greenwich Library on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. A reception will precede the event at 6:30 p.m.

The average American uses about 500 plastic bags each year, for about twelve minutes each.

The film begins with simple questions: “Do we need plastic bags? What are they made from? Where do they go when we throw them away?” Soon, we discover that plastics are made from fossil fuels, how bits of plastic are contaminating the oceans and endangering marine life, how plastic is shipped to other countries to be recycled in an exploitative and harmful manner, and how hormone-disrupting chemicals in plastics leach into our bodies, jeopardizing our developmental and reproductive systems.

Bag It is eye-opening, but ultimately hopeful, reminding viewers that we as consumers have a choice in what we purchase, and how we can use and reuse what we buy.

Registration is highly encouraged on the Library’s online calendar at greenwichlibrary.org
