At approximately 7:38 p.m. on Dec. 7, multiple Greenwich Fire Department engines along with Truck 1, Rescue 5 and the Deputy Chief responded to a reported chimney fire in a 115-year-old, three-story, single family home of about 9,000 square feet in the Field Point Circle section of town, according to a press release from GFD Assistant Fire Chief, Robert Kick.
Units remained for nearly four hours until the scene was cleared shortly after 11:30 p.m. No occupants were found inside home, and no injuries were reported.
According to the press release, upon arrival, units noticed “a heavy smoke condition throughout the structure with a fire in the basement.” An additional Engine and Ladder company were called to the scene.
“The firefighters advanced 2 hose lines into the building while additional crews began to search the home for trapped occupants. All searches were complete with no occupants found,” Kick said in the press release. “Additionally, the firefighters were able to minimize significant damage by containing the fire to the basement and 1st floors with smoke damage throughout the structure.”
Overall, five Engines, two Ladder trucks, 1 Rescue unit and 12 staff and support vehicles were dispatched. Approximately 50 people responded to the scene.
The origin and cause of the fire are under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s office.
