Richard Stefani, a longtime resident of Greenwich, died May 14 after a long illness.
Richard was born in San Francisco in 1929. He was the son of Fortunato and Rose Albina Stefani. He graduated from the University of San Francisco with majors in philosophy and political science.
During the Korean Conflict he served in the United States Army as the commanding officer of an anti-aircraft battery protecting the Boeing Aircraft plant.
After his army service, he joined IBM and managed branch offices in Idaho, Colorado and Kansas.
He then transferred to the IBM World Trade Corporation. As country manager in Caracas, Venezuela, he was part of that country’s first peaceful election between two different political parties.
After three years in Paris and positions in the New York headquarters, he retired in 1987 and became active in town of Greenwich matters. He was elected to the RTM, where he served on several committees, was chairman of the board of GEMS, and president of the Round Hill Association.
He co-authored the Greenwich Scenic Road Ordinance, which was approved by the Planning & Zoning and the RTM in 1992, and together with a group of neighbors, followed the newly prescribed steps to make Buckfield Lane the first scenic road in Greenwich, thus protecting the trees and stone walls that line it.
Richard is survived by his wife, Patricia, son, Michael Stefani, daughter, Sarah Morena, grandchildren Robert Stefani, Thomas Stefani, Emily Morena and Katherine Morena, and sister, Joan Nielsen.
A family memorial will be held at a later date.
