“Color in Ancient Greek Sculpture” will be the subject of Fairfield University Professor Katherine Schwab on Saturday, June 17 at 2 p.m. The free lecture, sponsored by the Archeological Associates of Greenwich (AAG), will be at the Byram Schubert Library, 21 Mead Ave.
Greek sculpture originally had a rich palette of color, through the application of pigment and metals. This lecture takes a closer look at the use of color in Greek sculpture and architectural sculpture through new evidence including studies to reimagine the appearance of the sculptures and how they were perceived in antiquity.
Since 1988, Professor Schwab has taught at Fairfield University. She received her Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU. Her research areas include the Parthenon metopes and ancient Greek hairstyles. Her drawings form a traveling exhibition called “An Archaeologist’s Eye: the Parthenon Drawings” that has been touring the U.S. since 2014 and continues until 2018. She has curated exhibitions including “Photographs of the Caryatid Hairstyling Project” highlighting a video that has been screened internationally. She has recently returned from new studies in Greece.
