Greenwich Hospital will present a lecture on Cancer: “Old and New Approaches,” on Tuesday, May 2 from 12 to 1:30 p.m., as part of the Women’s Health Initiative 2016-2017 lecture series. The lecture will be held in the Noble Conference Center at the hospital.
Donald Max Engelman, PhD, Higgins Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University, will speak about tumor acidity as a new approach to targeting breast and other tumors. Tumors are acidic, and the more aggressive the tumor is, the more acidic it is. Engelman and his team have developed new ways to take advantage of tumor acidity as a target for diagnosis and therapy. Despite advances in early detection and understanding of the molecular bases of breast cancer biology, approximately 30% of all patients with early-stage breast cancer have recurrent disease, which is metastatic in most cases. Acidy may be a better target than markers used in other approaches that often fail through the emergence of resistant tumors.
Engelman, accompanied with John Deacon, PhD, associate research scientist, will explain tumor heterogeneity, acidity, and their new approaches.
