Astronomical Society Holds ‘Asteroseismology’ Lecture

“Listening to the Stars” will be the topic of the next Astronomical Society of Greenwich lecture on Sunday, April 30 at 3:30 p.m.

Stars hum. Quite literally! While we cannot hear their sounds because of the emptiness of space, we can detect the ‘sounds’ through the study of their oscillations and quakes. These ‘sounds’ disclose what happens inside a star in a manner similar to the way earthquake waves can inform us about the Earth’s interior.

The study of stars (asteroseismology) has revolutionized our understanding of the universe. While the Canadian satellite MOST and European mission CoROT allowed us to study stellar pulsations, the recent NASA Kepler Mission has allowed us to perform asteroseismic studies more comprehensively.

Dr. Sarbani Basu, Chair, Astronomy Department Yale University, New Haven, will give everyone a flavour of what asteroseismology has revealed over the past couple of decades and how we are using the results.

The lecture takes place at the Bruce Museum, 1 Museum Dr., and it’s open to the public. Admission is free to museum members and ticket holders; others by donation. For more information, visit astrogreenwich.org
