On Tuesday, Feb. 7, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Dr. Jessica Whiteside will present “From Molecules to Mass Extinction: Using Chemical Clues to Unlock the Secrets of the Past,” at the Bruce Museum. Dr. Whiteside is Associate Professor, National Oceanography Centre Southampton, University of Southampton in England.
“People often think of fossils as the remains of hard parts, such as bones, shells, and wood,” Dr. Whiteside remarked. “I will discuss how we can use another type of fossil, tiny organic molecules preserved in the rock record, to reconstruct the causes and effects of major mass extinctions and other sudden climate change events in Earth’s past. These past events have important clues for understanding the future of our warming world.”
The program includes light refreshments and open galleries at 6:30 p.m., lecture is at 7. Bruce Museum members free, non-members $15. Reservations are suggested; call 203-413-6757 or email Science@brucemuseum.org.
