A dangerous weather event is heading towards Greenwich, as residents should expect some heavy rains and strong winds to hit the town shortly and last into tomorrow.
The Town of Greenwich is under several advisories, watches and warnings throughout the remainder of the day.
Until 1 a.m. on Tuesday, Greenwich is under a high wind warning, as winds coming from the Northeast 30 to 40 miles per hour are expected. Wind gusts as can reach as high as 60 miles per hour. The National Weather Service says that winds of this magnitude could blow down trees and power lines and that numerous power outages could be expected. Sustained wind speeds at least 40 miles per hour or gusts of 58 miles per hour or more can lead to property damage.
In addition, a flood watch is in affect until Tuesday morning at 6 a.m., as rainfall amounts from the storm can reach one to two inches, with locally higher amounts of four inches possible. The NWS states that rains from the storm could result in moderate urban flooding and minor small stream flooding.
A Costal Flood Advisory is also in effect, starting at 5 p.m. Monday and lasting until 11 p.m.
The National Weather Service said the advisory is for low lying areas around Western Long Island Sound, which includes the shores of Greenwich. Coastal flood impacts include minor flooding on waterfront and shoreline roads, but the roads should remain passable. Impacts on the shoreline include elevated water levels in combination with rough surf, which can cause minor beach erosion.
The heaviest winds from this storm should leave the area in the overnight hours, while the rain will be with us into Tuesday and last until midday.
