Montepicaza, the most renowned fashion brand produced and sold in Spain will open its first U.S. store on Thursday, Dec. 15 in Greenwich. The new store which will be located at 371 Greenwich Ave., will offer men’s and women’s fashion sportswear and accessories.
Montepicaza, based in Toledo, Spain, was founded in 1999 by Oscar Bermudez. From the start, the vision was to design a business model that would revitalize the artistic process of textile manufacturing in Spain, now long forgotten by the majority of chains that have based their production in Asia. The challenge has been and continues to be succeeding in manufacturing a large number of garments; shoes, sweaters, t-shirts, pants, dresses, skirts and more that all offer the highest quality at the most reasonable prices. Today, Montepicaza has established itself as one of the most recognized contemporary brands on the fashion scene nationwide, in Spain, has over 40 franchised stores and is sold in more than 120 multi-market (department) stores.
Montepicaza is known as a classic sportswear brand with artisanal flair and a level of tailoring that truly stands out. The quality and attention to detail is similar to Polo’s Black Label with price tags that resemble popular contemporary brands. The brand offers an extensive range of sizes, from 0-14. “Wearing clothing that is tailored properly, form-fitting and fits you well is the key to feeling and looking fashion forward,” said Ellen Christian-Reed, one of the visionaries behind this first US store.
Through a partnership between dear friends from university years in Spain, Ellen Christian-Reid along with her partner in Spain, Victor del Cerro are launching Montepicaza for the first time in the United States. The store is a culmination of Ellen’s lifelong dream to own a clothing store that offered something special and very different from what one finds in the typical American store. Ellen, a long-time New York transplant by way of Rhode Island, has personal and professional roots in Greenwich. In her former life, Ellen was a fund-raiser and marketing executive, spending some years at Convent of the Sacred Heart developing their annual giving program and currently, her daughter is a student at Eagle Hill.
“Greenwich is a natural launching point for the Montepicaza brand because it aligns with the lifestyle and demographics, classic and elegant,” says Christian-Reid. Plans are in the works to expand the brand to include other similar communities: Nantucket, Newport, Southampton, Boston and Palm Beach and the brand will soon be offered for sale on-line in 2017.
