Teens Initiate Toiletry Drive for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

toiletry-drive

The month of October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and a group of Greenwich teens is doing their part to raise awareness of this important issue. The middle and high school students, who are part of the JCC Greenwich Teen Action Committee, is partnering with two organizations that provide services to victims of domestic abuse: the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty and YWCA Greenwich Domestic Abuse Services.

Toiletries collected during this month-long drive will be packaged into emergency shelter bags and given to women and children who are seeking refuge from abusive relationships. When victims are leaving their homes, these small necessities become expensive and burdensome. The relief of having these items can really make a difference in their lives. Suggestions for new, full size products include: toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorant, soap and body wash, lotion, hair products, pads and tampons, make up, non-perishable food, diapers, and baby supplies.

Items can be dropped off at JCC Greenwich, One Holly Hill Lane throughout the month of October, or at the YWCA Greenwich screening of The Children Next Door on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 6:30 p.m., at Bow Tie Cinemas, Greenwich Plaza.

The Teen Action Committee meets monthly during the school year to help plan and organize community service projects for middle and high School students in Greenwich. For more information and to join, contact Leah Schechter at 203-552-1818 or leah@jccgreenwich.org.
