Every year, Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture – a nonprofit food and education center that is working to improve the way America eats and farms – in conjunction with Whole Foods Market, conducts a campaign to help teachers from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut expand their knowledge of sustainable farming while learning how to incorporate food and agricultural facts and issues into their classroom lessons. Greenwich’s own Putnam Indian Field School (PIFS) pre-K teacher Diane Gordon is one of five Connecticut educators chosen this year.

Teacher nominations were accepted via Whole Foods Markets throughout the tri-state area and Gordon was nominated by a PIFS parent for her work in helping children to become passionate and thoughtful thinkers about the food they eat as well as being respectful to the environment. Gordon has been very successful incorporating the school’s sustainable gardens into the daily PIFS curriculum, allowing every child hands-on experience, making it a fun and meaningful part of each day. She strongly believes that if we teach our children at a young age the importance of being kind to our planet, it will give them vital life skills and a wonderful appreciation of the environment that they live in.
