Just in time for Halloween, Greenwich Library welcomes acclaimed voice actor Alan Sklar. Sklar will perform a dramatic reading of Poe’s The Pit and the Pendulum on Tuesday, Oct. 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Library Meeting Room.
The Pit and the Pendulum, first published in 1842, is the story of the torments endured by a prisoner of the Spanish Inquisition, though Poe skews historical facts. The narrator eloquently describes his experience of being tortured. The story is especially effective at inspiring fear in the reader or listener because of its heavy focus on the senses, such as sound, emphasizing its reality, unlike many of Poe’s stories which feature the supernatural.
Dartmouth graduate Alan Sklar has been a professional voice actor for over 30 years, performing in thousands of radio and TV commercials, documentaries and video projects. He has narrated over 200 audiobooks and is a former announcer at WPIX-TV (Channel 11) in NYC.
