Western Middle School will host the first-ever “Greenwich Playing For Change Day” on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 2 to 5 p.m. “Playing for Change Day” is a worldwide event promoting global music education.
The free, family music festival will include Curiosity Concerts’ season opening concert at 3 p.m. featuring the Atacama Ensemble. Atacama will take attendees on journey through South America and its rich musical traditions. Discover how European and African influences melded with native South American music over centuries, creating distinct classical and folk styles.
In addition to the Atacama Ensemble concert, at “Playing for Change Day” families can attend Greenwich Symphony Orchestra’s Storytime Quartet “World Music Tour” narrated by Eddie Pleasant, at 2 p.m., as well as music education workshops and student recitals (throughout the afternoon). Workshop highlights include a Young People’s Drum Circle presented by Music Together of Fairfield County, and a parents workshop “Practice Revolution,” presented by Heather Watson of the Greenwich Suzuki Academy. All concerts and programs will be free and open to the public but the Atacama Ensemble concert requires advance registration at CuriosityConcerts.org
