Sail & Power Squadron offer Navigation class

navigation-class

The Greenwich Sail & Power Squadron will hold Piloting, a navigation class, starting Tuesday, Sept. 13, from 7 to 9 p.m., over eight Tuesdays. The class will take place at the Greenwich Police HQ, Training Room, 11 Bruce Place.

Piloting focuses on navigation as done on recreational boats today and uses GPS as a primary tool while including traditional techniques so the student will be able to find his/her way even if the GPS fails. It includes many in-class exercises, developing skills through hands-on practice. Topics include: charts and their interpretation, navigation aids, plotting courses and determining direction and distance, the mariner’s compass, use of GPS, pre-planning safe courses and entering them into the GPS, determining position by both GPS and traditional techniques such as bearings and dead reckoning, the “Seaman’s Eye” – simple skills for checking that one is on course. Instruction is highly inter-active and customized for each student.

The cost is $115 per student, which includes the Piloting textbook and the weekend navigator, chart, plotting equipment. There are discounts for families sharing materials.
