UPDATED: Monday, July 25 at 1:30 p.m.: The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Greenwich and the surrounding area until 8 p.m.
A severe thunderstorm watch means that weather conditions in Greenwich and the surrounding areas are favorable for the development of strong thunderstorms. This threat includes gusty winds up to 70 miles per hour, heavy rainfall and isolated large hail.
A watch does not means that severe weather is actually going to enter town, only that atmospheric conditions are favorable for severe weather to occur.
In addition, Greenwich and the surrounding areas are in a heat advisory until 8 p.m.. With high dew points and humidity, the heat index can peak around 100 degrees today. The combination of the heat and humidity will increase the risk for heat-related health issues, especially for the elderly, those with chronic health problems such as lung and heart disease, those working outdoors and other heat-sensitive groups of people.
