The commute to and from Greenwich might be significantly longer for people that take the Tappan Zee Bridge in New York.
Around noon today, a crane that was working on the construction of the New NY Bridge adjacent to the Tappan Zee Bridge collapsed, closing all lanes on the bridge. The crane is located on Rockland County side of the bridge.
Police are on the scene and traffic is being diverted from the scene. It is reported that two people are injured. Some alternates to avoid the accident are the George Washington Bridge, Bear Mountain Bridge and the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge.
The Tappan Zee Bridge is on Interstates 87 and 287 and is around 30 minutes, or 17 miles, away from the center of Greenwich.
UPDATE (5:15 p.m.): According to New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, the bridge is open northbound to Rockland County. Westchester County-bound lanes will soon reopen, with one lane of the bridge remaining closed due to damage from the crane collapse.
