The theme of this year’s Summer Reading Program at Greenwich Library is all about mind and body fitness. Sporting the slogan “On your mark, get set…read!” this year’s summer reading program invites children to exercise their minds, celebrate sports heroes and successes, learn about fitness, and try something new and exhilarating.
The goal of Greenwich Library’s summer reading program is to keep children reading during summer vacation so that valuable reading skills won’t be lost.
In addition, Greenwich Library has expanded a partnership with Greenwich Public Schools to provide books from the GPS summer reading list for grades K-8. While Greenwich Library has always provided print titles from the list, the extensive offerings will include many more ebooks, in support of the district’s digital learning initiatives. See the complete collection at greenwich.lib.overdrive.com or by visiting greenwichlibrary.org.
“Studies have shown that children who continue to read during the summer months perform significantly better than those who do not,” said Children’s Librarian Deirdre Sullivan. “Children who are already reading increase their reading fluency and comprehension; those who are just starting to read maintain their early achievements and skills.”
All children who are reading independently are welcome to join the Summer Reading Program. Students grades K-6 can register online for the Main Library program beginning Monday, June 13. Registration for the Byram and Cos Cob reading programs begins on Monday, June 20. Receive a globe beach ball when you register!
Register online at greenwichlibrary.org/children. Track your reading online, find out about special events and the prizes you earn when you reach your reading goals.
Preschool children can join in the fun to earn small prizes in the Read-to-Me program at the Main Library. Visit the Library to register.
