The Astronomical Society of Greenwich will host Prof. Jason Kendall presenting “LIGO: Gravitational Waves Discovered!” on Sunday, May 15 at 3:30 p.m.

In February, it was announced that the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) was able to “listen in” on the moments before a black hole binary system (two black holes orbiting one another) merged as one, producing a gravitational wave signal. Prof. Kendall will discuss this important event and why it “will open up a new field of discovery.”

Jason Kendall is Professor of Astronomy at William Paterson University and is a board member of the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York. Since 2008, Prof. Kendall has led the Inwood Astronomy Project, which has brought over 200 stargazing and public astronomy events to upper Manhattan.

The lecture takes place at the Bruce Museum, 1 Museum Drive and it’s open to the public. Admission is free to museum members and ticket holders; others by donation to the museum.
