Riverside Girl Scout, Annabel Lindh, is in the process of finishing her Gold Award Project. The award is the highest award a Girl Scout can achieve and requires the qualifying Scout to leverage leadership and communication skills to address an issue in her community. Only about 5.4% of eligible Girl Scouts actually earn the Gold Award.
Annabel, who has been a Riverside Girl Scout for 12 years, chose to address the issue of recycling in her community. For her project she taught third and fourth graders at Riverside Elementary School about what can and cannot be recycled and also why it is so important. She also brought these recycling lessons to the Girl Scout community. In addition, Annabel created a kid-friendly website with information about recycling as well as recycling-related games and activities.
For the final part of the project, Annabel set up a cell phone drive collecting old, unwanted cell phones to be recycled properly. Annabel has done this collection at Riverside and Old Greenwich Elementary Schools and has spread the word to the community through Facebook and friends. The cell-phone drive is still going on. Anyone interested may drop off cell phones at the collection box at the Boys and Girls Club.
Qualifying Greenwich Girl Scout Gold Award recipients will be honored at a local reception at the St. Lawrence Club in Cos Cob on May 17, followed by a state-wide recognition event at the Naugatuck Community College in Waterbury on June 5.
