With a moderate to strong tailwind at Lake Washinee, the Brunswick School crew team won six out of its seven races at the 1500-meter Salisbury Double Dual on Saturday.

Racing against the Salisbury School, Tabor Academy, and Boston College (B.C.) High School, the lone Bruin loss was a one boat-length setback to Salisbury’s Varsity-8.

The win ensured the Scarlet Knights will hold the coveted Curtis Trophy for another season. In the 11-year history of the trophy, Brunswick holds a slim 6-5 advantage in trophy victories.

After losing to Salisbury in the first race, the Brunswick Varsity-8 (coxswain Alec Esmond, stroke Matthew Womble, Will Bass, Will Powers, Gamble Freydberg, Thomas Kern, Alexander Kutner, Andreas Kern and bow Will Marvin), improved in the second race, laying down the fastest time of the day (4:27.9) in their 15-second win over Tabor.

Brunswick’s Second Varsity-8 showed composure rallying from behind to win the opener over Salisbury. In its second race, Brunswick led wire-to-wire over B.C. High.

The Third Varsity-8 kept their undefeated season in-tact with dominant performances over Salisbury as well as Tabor. Brunswick’s Fourth Varsity-8 boat won its lone race of the day by open over Salisbury and two boats from BC High.

The Bruins’ next race is Wednesday, April 30, against Fairfield Prep at the Captain’s Cove Marina in Bridgeport.
