Greenwich Community Gardens announces Garden Plot Sign-up Days, Saturday, March 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday, March 13, 1 to 4 p.m. If you are a new or returning gardener interested in gardening at the Armstrong Court Community Garden or the Bible Street Community Garden, go to the Cos Cob Firehouse, second floor, at 200 East Putnam Avenue, Cos Cob, to reserve your garden plot for 2016.
Though most of the 140 plots are raised one foot off the ground, there are a dozen “Universal Access” plots at the Bible Street Garden that are table top height for those with limited mobility. Both community gardens are outfitted with long and short-handled tools, wheelbarrows, composting and irrigation. The beds are filled with organic soil and organic compost. Gardeners are required to use non-GMO organic seeds, some of which will be available for a nominal donation at both sign-up days. T-shirts bearing the Greenwich Community Garden logo will also be available for a $10 donation.
Garden classes are offered throughout the year and new gardeners can request a garden mentor who can help them get started. The first garden class of the year, “Getting More From Your Raised Beds – Part 1” will be on Saturday, March 19, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Sam Bridge Nursery on North Street. Horticulturist and Organic Expert, Mary Jo Bridge Palmer, will be teaching the class. Class will be followed by a brief tour of the new greenhouses for interested participants.
